Formation of nematic ordered cellulose and chitin

چکیده
We proposed in a previous paper a unique form of j3-glucan association, nematic ordered cellulose (NOC) that is molecularly ordered, yet non-crystalline. NOC has unique characteristics; in particular, its surface properties provide with a function of tracks or scaffolds for regulated movements and fiber-production or Acetobacter xylinum [Kondo et al. 2002. Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 99: 14008-14013]. In order to extend the usage of this NOC film as a functional template, the present article attempts to clarify how j3-gJucan association is initiated and established by uniaxial stretching of water swollen cellulose gel films. Wide angle X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy were employed to exhibit molecular behavior of the ordering at various scales. Then, the preparative method for NOC was applied to the other carbohydrate polymers such as a-chitin and cellulose. a-chitin blends, leading to nematic ordered states as well as cellulose. However, the method did not necessarily provide the typical structure like NOC at the molecular scale. Instead, it yielded a variety of hierarchical nematic ordered states at various scales, which allows development of new artificial ordered sheet structures.

Recent Advances in Chiral Nematic Structure and Iridescent Color of Cellulose Nanocrystal Films
One unique property of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) is their property of forming suspensions with chiral nematic order. This order can be preserved in films cast from the suspensions, raising the possibility of applications as photonic materials and templates. However, it has proved difficult to generate uniform, well-ordered chiral nematic materials from CNC. Recently, the importance of kineti...

Cellulosic liquid crystalline solutions and suspensions form chiral nematic phases that show a rich variety of optical textures in the liquid crystalline state. These ordered structures may be preserved in solid films prepared by evaporation of solvent or suspending medium. Film formation from aqueous suspensions of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) was investigated by polarized light microscopy, op...
متن کامل"Nematic ordered cellulose": a concept of glucan chain association.
Native cellulose consists of a set of parallel chains composed of glucose. Most of the time, these chains are highly ordered and form a structure that is known as a microfibril. On the other hand, highly crystalline forms of cellulose are more difficult to process and often are unpredictable in their behavior. If an ordered but noncrystalline form of cellulose could be produced, this would grea...
متن کاملSalmonella Biofilm Formation on Aspergillus niger Involves Cellulose – Chitin Interactions
Salmonella cycles between host and nonhost environments, where it can become an active member of complex microbial communities. The role of fungi in the environmental adaptation of enteric pathogens remains relatively unexplored. We have discovered that S. enterica Typhimurium rapidly attaches to and forms biofilms on the hyphae of the common fungus, Aspergillus niger. Several Salmonella enteri...
متن کاملChitin nanocrystal dispersions: rheological and microstructural properties
Dispersions of colloidal particles in aqueous media are widely investigated because of their use in many industrial applications (foods, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, paints, etc.). Acid-hydrolyzed chitin has been reported to spontaneously disperse into colloidal rod-like crystalline particles, which can form rigid structures. Such colloidal dispersions of acid-degraded chitin can undergo an isot...
